In general he just… doesn’t take care of himself well, especially in the emotional sense. Work comes first, necessities come second (while he likes to pretend he’s invincible and he does push himself way more than he should, this must, at the very least, be a second priority so that he’s able to keep up his strength and actually do things). He’ll forgo basic necessities (enough sleep, decent food, relaxation time) to get his work done.
He’s so prideful and determined to get things done according to his own standards, that it’s often detrimental to his health.

I wouldn’t be surprised if she went back and forth between being extra friendly with him, trying to gain his trust, treating him more like a son than all the other kids… and being overly frustrated and critical and cruel towards him because of her own fears and frustrations. She didn’t want to risk spreading suspicion by flat-out interrogating him as to Simon’s whereabouts–not that she had any proof that Horace knew where Simon was (which he didn’t), but the two were close, so she figured it was likely he knew something–but she kept a close eye on him.
